Age-Friendly DC Task Force

Total public members:                  11           

Method of Appointment:              Appointed by Mayor, confirmed by Council

2016 Appointments:                     1 for a community member with expertise in Housing             

Length of Appointment:               3 years

Residency:                                       Strong preference for DC residents from all 8 wards

 

Paid board:                                      No (all roles are voluntary)

The purpose of the Task Force shall be to advise the Mayor regarding issues related to making the District of Columbia an age-friendly city by 2017 according to the World Health Organization's ("WHO") eight domains and two DC-specific domains: (1) outdoor spaces and buildings, (2) transportation, (3) housing, (4) social participation, (5) respect and social inclusion, (6) civic participation and employment, (7) communication and information, (8) community support and health services, (9) disaster preparedness and response, and (10) elder abuse, neglect, and fraud.

Commission Membership 

The Task Force shall be comprised of twenty-five (25) voting members. All Community Task Force members shall be appointed by the Mayor and shall include the following:

  1. 1 representative to serve as Co-Chairperson
  2. 1 representative with expertise on Outdoor Spaces and Buildings (domain #1)
  3. 1 representative with expertise on Transportation (domain #2)
  4. 1 representative with expertise on Housing (domain #3)
  5. 1 representative with expertise on Social Participation (domain #4)
  6. 1 representative with expertise on Respect and Social Inclusion (domain #5)
  7. 1 representative with expertise on Civic Participation and Employment (domain #6)
  8. 1 representative with expertise on Communication and Information (domain #7)
  9. 1 representative with expertise on Community Support and Health Services (domain #8)
  10. 1 representative with expertise on Emergency Preparedness and Resilience (domain #9)
  11. 1 representative with expertise on Elder Abuse, Neglect, and Fraud (domain #1)

D.C. Government Members:  

  1. The Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services shall serve as the Co-Chairperson;  
  2. The Director, Office of Planning, or his or her designee;  
  3. The Director, Department of Housing and Community Development, or his or her designee;  
  4. The Director, Office of Community Affairs, or his or her designee;  
  5. The Director, District Department of Transportation, or his or her designee;  
  6. The Director, Office of Disability Rights, or his or her designee;  
  7. The Director, Department of Employment Services, or his or her designee;  
  8. The Director, D.C. Office on Aging, or his or her designee;  
  9. The Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice, or his or her designee;  
  10. The Director, Department of Human Services, or his or her designee;  
  11. The Deputy Mayor for Education, or his or her designee;  
  12. The Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, or his or her designee;
  13. The Officer, Office of the Chief Technology Officer, or his or her designee;
  14. The Deputy Mayor for Greater Economic Opportunity, or his or her designee.  

The terms of the members of the Task Force shall be as follows:

A. Community Members shall serve until December 31, 2017; B. The Community Member Co-Chairperson shall serve at the pleasure of the Mayor in his or her capacity as Co-Chairperson.  The D.C. Government Member Co-Chairperson shall serve at the pleasure of the Mayor.  Government members shall serve at the pleasure of the Mayor; E. The Mayor shall appoint members to fill vacancies for the remainder of the unexpired term.

Qualifications:  

Individuals with professional and life experience relevant to at least 1 of the 10 domains. 

Time commitment:  

The Commission has monthly meetings; subcommittees meet as required to complete tasks.
